Rymer is an old variety, said by Hogg to have been raised by a Mr Rymer at Thirsk. Bunyard suggests it was raised about 1750. The first record was in the Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London in 1818. Introduced at the end of the 18th century in Yorkshire.

It was exhibited from both Hertfordshire and Kent at the Apple and Pear Conference of 1934. Grown by Sir William Macarthur at Camden Park, New South Wales, Australia between about 1820 and 1861.

A free growing tree and a good bearer. Considered a fine cooking apple which can also be enjoyed eaten fresh.
