Redcurrant berries are the early summer jewel in the garden ripening in time for the December festive season. The small bright red fruit hang in little trusses and are easy to harvest. They can be eaten fresh loaded with Vitamin C, and are the perfect accompaniment for desserts, cheese platters, used in baking, summer pudding, sprinkled on porridge and blended with other berries for a lovely summer berry salad. The fruit are also used for making redcurrant jelly to go with various savoury dishes. Fruit are high in pectin great for jam makers. The bushes are small and upright not taking up much garden space. They do well in full sun and will tolerate part shade although the crop may ripen later.
- Pollination Group: generally self-fertile so no other pollinators are required, although fruit size and pollination can be improved with other red or white currants nearby
