Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles speciosa) is a hardy, deciduous shrub to 2 m, flowering in late winter to early spring with striking mostly red, pink or white blooms on bare branches. Its small, aromatic fruit resemble quince and are excellent cooked in jams, sauces, or desserts, and can also be used to perfume rooms or linen.

With thorny branches, bird-friendly cover, it thrives in full sun, tolerates frost, suits most soils, and can be grown as a feature shrub, informal hedge or bonsai. A useful cut flower in winter. Often called Japonica or Flowering Quince, it's distinct from the true Japanese (Chaenomeles japonica) and Chinese (Pseudocydonia sinensis) quinces.
