Lilac Mrs Edward Harding (Syringa vulgaris 'Mrs Edward Harding') has lovely fragrant large double purpley-red flowers that lighten to pink as they age. This long-lived deciduous shrub or small tree has heart-shaped dark green leaves and some autumn colour. From France 1923. Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.

• Uses: ornamental shrub, hedge, cut flower
• Size: 2-4 metres high x 3 metres wide depending on conditions
• Flowering: late spring
• Features: clusters of fragrant purpley-red flowers, some autumn foliage
