Pyrus communis 'Jargonelle' is a patriarch among pears, dating from about 1620's. It is an early ripener harvesting in late summer. Brownish skin with a red flush on the sunny face, flesh melting with a sweet musky flavour. Like most early pomme fruits it does not keep well and is best enjoyed while fresh.
Pear trees are known for their longevity, but Jargonelle has a particular reputation for being long-lived.
