The Himalayan Pear Pyrus pashia is a hardy deciduous tree growing to around 9m with a natural range across the Himalayas, from Pakistan to Vietnam and from southern province of China to the northern region of India. It is also found in Kashmir, Iran and Afghanistan. Its fruit is edible and and looks like a russet apple . Has an astringent but sweet taste and fully ripe fruit, when bletted, is sweet and pleasant to eat.
It grows well in a wide range of soils and can tolerate dry conditions although regular summer rainfall will result in a larger tree. An excellent small tree with attractive spring blossom.
