The Japanese Maple, Acer palmatum, is native to Central Asia from Japan through to south east Russia. A. palmatum 'Atropurpureum' is one of its many cultivars that is a firm garden favourite. Growing to around 6m tall and 6m wide it is an ideal tree in a small garden and can grow well in partial shade. It is often multi-stemmed.
It's fine, palmate foliage changes from a deep plum colour in spring to a mid-red in summer followed by a bright scarlet autumn colouring.
